While certification isn't required to be a climatologist, belonging to a professional organization can provide networking opportunities while looking for jobs. For those already working and/or doing climatology research, meeting with peers offers a place to exchange information, spark ideas, and even begin collaborating on new climatology projects. Climatologists can apply for membership with the American Association of State Climatologists and the American Meteorological Society.
