New guidelines from the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) stress most OTC cough expectorants or suppressants -- including cough syrups and cough drops -- do not treat the underlying cause of the cough. Instead, the ACCP recommends adults take an older type of antihistamine with a decongestant.

The ACCP says the drugs are not useful in children and can actually be harmful. They say a cough not related to chronic lung conditions, the environment, or other specific factors, will resolve on its own. The new recommendations also stress the prevention of whooping cough in adults.

They call for adults up to 65 years old to get a new adult vaccine for the disease. Twenty-eight percent of whooping cough cases in the United States are in adults. The ACCP guidelines provide the most comprehensive recommendations for diagnosing and managing coughs in adults and children.
