I'm gonna say the ability to control fire, we would never be warm or have food as we know it without it. Second is the harnessing of electricity. Both things are not as amazing as the internet and the I pad but have done way more to shape the world we live in.So these really aren't inventions, they are kinda techniques to use what the natural world already provided.
As far as the greatest man made invention of all time, maybe bread, its amazing and who the hell figured that out?! Yeast is some crazy stuff.
The greatest invention of all time is penicillin. It has saved more lives and was invented in a time that did not have all the equipment of today. But the ability to prevent and stop infection has done more for mankind then anything else.It gave man the ability to operate and stop infection.
Or you could go with the Monks discovering beer, which has also helped greatly in the proliferation of mankind.
