What is the history behind the saying 'screw you'?

Screw you" originally denoted an early 18th Century metaphor: driving a screw in with a screwdriver. Later on, it began to refer to having sex with. So it is basically a variation of, "f---k you."

Now, people say it as they would say "curse you," most often saying it to a person that they hate.
