Tough, but very common question Without knowing the specifics of your book, hard to give specific answers, but I’d suggest you start perhaps by joining the self-publishing email list on Yahoo groups. Even tho’ you’ve gone thru someone else, this is the sort of question they discuss and have genuine, up to date answers for. You can join by sending a blank email to [email protected] websavvywriter.com/blog/ I find this website just a tad busy looking for my taste, but the info there is solid on marketing yourself and your book.

Unless you’re a biggie, the sad truth of publishing is that unless you go out there and knock down walls and beat on doors, it’s unlikely folks are going to come looking for you. You’re the one that has to make it happen. parapublishing.com/sites/para/ This is the website for Dan Poynter.

He is one of the best resources for just the sort of info you’re looking for. When I first began to look into creating my own small publishing company, his books were my Bible, so to speak. Just about anything you’ve ever wondered about is in them, so my recommendation would be to find the latest in his self-publishing series (again, all applicable whether you used a publisher or not) and read it from cover to cover.

Good stuff there of the whole picture, including marketing and getting your book into bookstores and stores. writing-world.com/admin1/siteindex.shtml Tends at times to be very basic, but an excellent starting point. I recommend this site often because it covers so much, so many different aspects of writing.

While we'd all like easy answers, directions to success, the more we know, the more likely that becomes. Hope these help! 1 Tundra, regarding your answer "Tough, but very common question": I'm not self-published though, and I know my books sell on both coasts. I just want to expand the audience. My publicist keeps coming up with great ideas, it just seems like all of it takes time and lots and lots of money!

2 Oh, yeah, one of those things where we wish we had 36 hour days. Whether self-published or not, tho', I'd recommend you take a gander at the Yahoo list link I sent. I wish I'd taken the time to check your website before I answered, cos would have probably answered somewhat differently, but marketing is marketing.

I don't participate in the list, just lurk, but some of the ideas and bits of info shared have been helpful, even tho' non-fiction is my genre. There's one guy on the list who, I swear, wears me out talking about his efforts to promote. I'd never have the guts to try most of 'em, I'm rotten on cold calls, so to speak, but it reminds me to keep plugging away.

I love the use of the video on your website, btw. Great teaser. Now if we could only grab those booksellers and make 'em sit down and watch, huh?

3 Exactly! I'm glad you like the video. I made that for a PhD class... I'll take a look at the Yahoo list.

I do mostly fiction, but I'm writing a non-fiction true-crime book as well, so I'm open to all of it. Everyone around me says I'm a marketing guru, but I only feel that way here in Missouri and the Midwest. People on the coast are only buying the book when I'm on nationwide radio or doing something to draw their attention to it.

I just want an Easy button so that every bookstore carries it! :-) .
