When and Why did America loose its compassion and and empathy for the less fortunate citizens Today?

Same reason why it happened in other countries before us: scarcity of resources and over-population. Want to see world population and scarcity effects in a microcosm? Go to a nightclub.

People get really fussy when the line gets too long to get in. But when there's no line, everyone's like, "Oh hi! How are you?

Man, it sure is empty, let me call some friends! " We don't vary much in behavior when it comes to non-nightclubs that get crowded.

I believe the simple answer may be that many people are having problems today. The longer more intense answer is everyone is more interested in helping people outside of our country then the ones who reside in it.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
