Similar questions: student loan deferred accumulate interest.
It depends. Is your loan subsidized or not? A subsidized Stafford loan does not accrue interest when the student is enrolled in school at least half time or when the loan is deferred.
Subsidized loans are handed out to those students who show particular financial need - either because they're independent and the expected family contribution doesn't include the parents' income, or because the parents' income is low enough to warrant the extra help. During these interest-free periods the government pays the interest. An unsubsidized loan, Stafford or otherwise, will accrue interest.
Most student loans fall in this category. That last comes from personal experience. I was so, so close to having my student loans paid off when I re-enrolled in school. My loans were unsubsidized and they're definitely accruing interest!
(I’m still making payments - against the principal as well as the interest - but the interest charges are definitely there. If I were to stop making payments, which I could because of my deferment status, the interest would continue to build.) I wasn’t entirely sure about my subsidized loan statement since I don't have any personal experience, so I found this - the information you’re looking for is at the end of the first paragraph. Hope this helps!

Most likely! There are deferments and there are forbearances. If you’re deferring because you’ll be in school, then interest stops during the period you’re a full-time student (it also depends on whether you have a stafford subsidized or unsubsidized loan, or plus, etc.) if you’re forbearing because of any thing else (pretty much!
) then, interest ever so steadily, accrues. (and you def. Don’t want to ask me how I know that!
:P besides having worked in Financial Aid at a university). I'd go ahead and look at the link i've posted for all the info you need. Hth, i.

2 Yes it does. We are paying the interest on my daugters school loan while she is in school. The other option was to le tthe interest accumulate and defer it until she graduated but we didn't want to do that.
Once she is done school and gets a job she takes over the loan. The loan is relatively small thankfully.

3 It actually depends on which kind of student loan you get. The Federal Stafford SUBSIDIZED student loans do not accumulate interest until they enter the repayment status. The UNSUBSIDIZED loans accumualte from the moment you get the loan.
