Which is better: gas water heater or electric water heater?

I used to live in an apartment with an electric water heater and it worked just fine. The new house I live in has a gas water heater and it heats water more quickly but that is the only significant difference I can find. Also, I've never noticed the gas water heater to create a significant rise in our monthly gas bills even when we've had times of high hot water usage in the household.
