There is a saying that 'poets write for other poets who read their works'. That is exaggerated. Walt Whitman's 'Leaves of Grass' (1855) was published in Spain only three years ago translated but with the original English texts.
In Spain, poetry is very popular, like in Iran where Omar Khayyam (1048-1122) is still quoted in almost every family. Firdausi, also a fine Medieval poet, is a favorite guest in each Iranian family. As a lover of poetry that I read in several languages, I would love to know if people like T.S. Elliott etc. Are still read. I am not well informed about American poets.
I hope my co-citizens can help me a bit. Asked by janosj 46 months ago Similar questions: important read poets United States America nowadays Arts > Books > Books - Poetry.

There are contemporary poets and poets from the past who still remain very relevant. Poetry may not be the most popular form of literature, but it is not irrelevant. Poets who are read today are poets who are both living and poets who are dead.
There are children’s poets and adult poets. I’ll start with children’s poets, since that is how all people start out. Jack Prelutsky jackprelutsky.com is the current Children’s Poet Laureate.
He has written a ton of books. S poems tend to be cute and funny-- great for sneaking onto bookmarks. But his poetry isn’t strictly for children.
I happen to believe that in A Pizza the Size of the Sun, some of the subtly might get lost on younger readers and would best be appreciated by young adults and adults. Adults can certainly enjoy children’s poetry. Shel Silverstein is probably one of the most recognizable poets.
Who doesn’t know something from one of his books like Where the Sidewalk Ends, but again, The Giving Tree and other works may have subtlety even better appreciated by older audiences! Mother Goose is certainly still widely read! http://poetryforchildren.blogspot.com/2008/01/2008-lee-bennett-hopkins-award-for.html is a blog about poetry and poets who write for children and are read.
Walter Dean Myers http://www.walterdeanmyers.net/ writes and then he writes some more. Among his numerous writings, there is poetry. Jazz, contains some lovely poetry. As far as poets from grown ups go, there are even more!
There are the "official" poets like the poet laureates. You can find out more about poet laureates at http://www.loc.gov/poetry/laureate-2001-present.html.These are poets who are read! In addition to the national poet laureates, there are also state poet laureates, also definitely read.
http://www.loc.gov/rr/main/poets/current.html storical poet laureates are read too, like Gwendolyn Brooks in Illinois. http://aalbc.com/authors/gwendolyn.htm These are relevant people. So are prize winners. http://www.pushcartprize.com/ The pushcart prize is an honored award, and a number of poets have won this award.
They are known. Other Awards are the May Swenson Poetry Award, and the OSU Journal Award in Poetry. Philip Schultz and Robert Hass are a couple of other award winning poets.
Simon Armitage www.jackprelutsky. Com0 recently translated Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Its Brilliant.

I’m a big fan of the Alsop Review by Jaimes Alsop, another poet. Www.jackprelutsky. Com0 Of course there are historical poets who are read contemporarily.T.S.Eliot, Emily Dickinson , Walt Whitman, Sylvia Plath, Ted Hughes, Langston Hughes, the Brownings, Yeats, Keats, and so many other poets are read today in America and many still find relevance in those works.
Houseman was read on Four Weddings and a Funeral (Stop All the Clocks). Death Be Not Proud still rings centuries later.(Donne). Do not go gently unto that good night (Dylan Thomas).
And still more! Look at Shakespeare-- that guy’s work is practically falling out of the rafters. Poetry is still relevant.
