What, like this one?! Sorry--couldn't resist! Norman, we've always had a lot of questions that might not be considered quality questions.
ALWAYS. Since Day 1, pretty much. There has always been complaints about stupid questions, too.
So what has changed? Maybe they weren't so obvious before, because more of our "regular" people would ask good questions. You could more easily ignore the bad ones, as the next one was a good one.
You don't see too many of the regulars asking questions anymore, other than to complain. More good questions would help over shadow the poorer ones, don't you think? And no, the questioners are not on payroll, I am sure.

When I first arrived in the US as an immigrant I was attending a seminar and the speaker mentioned that the average intelligence of the Americans is equal to that of an 8th grader. I have been here now for a few years and now I perfectly understand that he was right on the dot. So to answer your question I will say that on this site most of the people have average intelligence. It does not bother me, I just participate when I feel like and answer or give my opinion if I am in a mood to do so?

There have always been stupid questions - true. Some were produced by Mturkers (Amazon). Now we are getting MANY MORE questions posed TO Amazon.
We are their customer service support department.
I've got to agree with Poppet on this one. As far as I'm concerned, the good ol', perfect days of AV that so many mourn never really existed. There were dumb questions then, just as there are dumb questions now.
There were simple questions that could have been answered with a quick Googe search, just as there are now. There were people quick to make a point of telling you what you were doing wrong asking and answering questions, just as there are now. In fact, tho' I wasn't one of the originals here, despite the fact that I came into AV very soon afterward, I lived in dread of doing or saying something wrong that would earn me the cutting disdain of one particular member who took it upon themself to try to dictate to us when and where we should respond.
That existed in October '06, when I finally braved the boards and started posting. My probably harsh assessment of the current atmosphere here, none of this directed totally at Norman, who made a gallant effort to make things better, only to be sucked down into the negative black hole: The one thing we really had going for us, however, in the "good ol' days" was that despite the occasionnal contrary member, while recongizing the problems of the site, we strove to hold it and each other up, not constantly harp on how bad the site was or how bored we were. At times, intentional or not, I get the feeling some of us are expected to perform like trained seals to entertain those who are chronically bored.
We're supposed to provide "fun" and "interesting questions, nevermind that when we try, very few of the bored folks bother to answer them. If we answer a question from the negative lovers and note that we're not bored here, we're accused of being suck-ups or working for Amazon (don't I wish). We're told we're just wasting our time here, doing nothing productive.
If I leave AV, it won't be because of any management changes, much as I've disliked some of the changes. It'll be because the supposed lovers of the site made it such an overwhelmingly negative experience for me. I don't surround myself with negative people in my real world, so maybe it's time to escape that dead weight in my virtual world, too.
But, now what, none of you want to read this, it's too "negative", so I'll just stop and say, bring on the unhelpful votes. Maybe it's time for me to do a Marshall and make a dramatic exit for awhile? .
I like to ask questions that get smart people to think. Why are derivative like a financial cancer? What is supercapitalism and how has it changed the world?
Will India be a superpower by 2020? Does family matter? .

You must be referring to me. No, I wish I were on someone's payroll.
I have no doubt that some are from Amazon's foreign Customer Service Representatives--who have been told by Amazon.com to ask ANY Questions in order to drive up the number of Askville "hits".

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
