Margaret Mitchell was an American author who is best known for her Pulitzer Prize wining novel, Gone with the Wind. She was born in Atlanta, GA in 1900 to Eugene and Mary Isabelle Mitchell. Prior to writing her acclaimed novel, Mitchell was a prestigious newspaper writer and a portrait and personality sketch artist.
Mitchell begin her formal education at Smith College, but she withdrew after her final exams in 1919. She then returned to Atlanta and joined the staff of The Atlanta Journal where she began writing a weekly column for the Sunday edition of the newspaper. At Margaret Mitchell’s death in 1949, Gone with the Wind was the best selling book of all-time only second to the Bible.
