Why are "Sloppy Joe's" called Sloppy Joe's?

My son asked me this question when I was preparing "Sloppy Joe's" for dinner. Of course, we realize it's because they are sloppy but who's Joe? Does this mean a meal for the average guy?

Joe is just "your average Joe. " I tried to find out if the original recipe was named after a particular Joe, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I think it just refers to "Joe Everyman."

Take a look at the wikipedia page for variations on the recipe/name such as Sloppy Toms and Smokey Joes. Sources: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloppy_joe .

Nobody knows Joe To quote the Encyclopedia of Food and Drink: The origins of this dish are unknown, but recipes for the dish date back at least to the 1940s. It dates in print to 1935. There is probably no Joe after whom it is named--but its rather messy appearance and tendency to drip off plate or roll makes "sloppy" an adequate description, and "Joe" is an American name of proletarian character and unassailable genuineness.

The average guy may make a meal of a Sloppy Joe, but it's kinda short on vegetables. A salad may be a bit frou-frou to accompany a Sloppy Joe, but if you make some cole slaw (shredded cabbage and mayonnaise, or even better Marie's Creamy Italian Garlic dressing) it'll go great either on top of or alongside the Sloppy Joe. If you pop open a can of green beans, you don't even need to heat it before you eat it.

Steaming some frozen green beans is tastier and better for you, but that requires more work. If you're feeding a crowd, though, you can make a few holes in a bag of frozen green beans and toss the whole thing in the microwave for five minutes, then serve.
