Similar questions: compact fluorescent light bulb melt smell.
That was mercury you were smelling. Oops. It likely got an extra jolt of current that overloaded it, with the opportunity to release its toxic mercury to the air around it--one of those details they don't tell us in this asinine push to save a little electricity by replacing all incandescent bulbs NOW!
Actually, if one breaks, you're to walk away and stay gone at least for 15 minutes. There could also have been some manufacturing errors.
The thing with compact flourescents is that they don't get very hot. If something melted, I suppose the first suspect would be a short, either in the lamp or in the bulb itself.
2 Wow! Yes, definitely a short. Glad it didn't start a fire!

3 They are a mistake, buy up a good supply of your fave old fashioned (incandescent ) light bulbs before the political correct ban kicks in in 2012 or 14 - imagine we have 1000s of years of energy suppliers we cant use and you have to save energy so you can live like a poor Europa peon. I bought a couple of cases of incandescent bulbs -you can still buy them , you are FREE to do so , better hurry . PS A LAMP AND A BULB IS THE SAME THING -non electricians confuse the terms, and they DO GET HOT -anything that uses electricity to generate light gets hot , and you will get hot because they don't last as long as they are claimed to last -your trash collection taxes will have to go up to dispose of them because they are considered HAZ MAT -they are loaded with mercury and can't go in the regular trash , but millions of these crappy lamps will end up putting mercury where it should not be, Nannie state pelosi -you did it again , and gwb actually wanted to be a nice guy and signed this political stinker, anyone that defends these lamps owns stock in the company or just don't know anything about the simple elegance of the incandescent light bulb.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
