Why do large lumps or "noses" develop on the tops of some of my cornbread muffins?

Without pictures it's difficult to say but assuming you're not adding fillings into them, and that they're baking in evenly shaped muffin trays, it sounds like air bubbles are forming in your muffins while baking and pushing up the surface of the muffin. Baked goods often display quirks and eccentricities, my mother's Apple and Banana bread often has large cracks on the top crust when baked while my cakes often have an uneven surface caused by bubbles forming just under the surface and then contracting once the cake is done baking. As long as the texture of your muffins is even and they are not coming out over or underbaked in different places I wouldn't worry about the shape being somewhat uneven.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
