Why do refugees pick USA, UK, Canada, OZ, NZ over rich Japan, S.Korea, Taiwan & Singapore?

Because the American right are wrong : ) Here in Ireland we have both public and private healthcare, if you earn under a certain amount or are unemployed or on a number of various schemes you qualify for free healthcare, including dental (although recently, because of the economic crisis caused by unbridled capitalism, access to free dental has been restricted: now you can only get one checkup and two fillings free per year - and as many extractions as are required) Anyway, it always amazes me how America can't even take care of her own people yet can spend billions on arms and foreign wars. Trickle down economics does not work. Each and every individual should be entitled to a basic standard of living and it is the States job to provide for this and not independent charities etc. I'm glad that here in Ireland we operate a welfare State, as does most of Europe - western Europe at least.

Having a welfare State doesn't make any country "socialist", this is simply a word the right like to bandy about to scare people - when they can't address an issue or when they know the answer won't wash they mention"socialism". It's truly ridiculous. We used get Fox News but dumped the channel and got Comedy Central instead, similar but Comedy Central is a bit more believable : ) Edit: Ireland stayed capitalist (unfortunatley) because of a balance between free market economics and a welfare State, as has the rest of western Europe and many other countries around the world - even the Americas neighbour to the north, Canada.

The US just can't seem to get this balance.

Because americans are completely polarised between political parties, neither are willing to come to any compromise about anything and therefore it splits the popular opinion of your country Im a New Zealander and although we are run by a center-right coalition government, most of the policies are fair and centrist in the respect that they encourage an equitable and prosperous society, as opposed to the self-fufilled interests of the controlling party.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
