Definetly when I first came to this country I barely spoke English and got hired at a fast food.
I worked in retail as a manager for many years and had 2 incidents that stand out. The first was when a customer refused an offer of help from one of my staff who was black and waited until I could help him, then made a racist comment to me about my employee. Before I could even say anything my district manager, who had just walked in and was close enough to hear the comment, refused to serve him asked him to leave the store.
I gained a lot of respect for my DM that day. The other incident was when I had a group of teenage German tourists in the store making insulting comments in German about some of my staff. I walked up to them and sternly asked "Kann ich ihnen helfen".
They were quite shocked to discover that I spoke German, and quickly became embarrassed when they realized I understood what they had been saying and left the store. So yeah, if someone was being overtly racist or homophobic I would refuse to serve them.
Nope. I would get the guy satisfied and out of there as quickly as I could. I would buy a round after work and trade war stories with the coworker.
The customer is a piece of ****, but my job is my job. I do what I'm paid for and keep solidarity with my fellow slaves.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
