Why do you think racism is kept alive?

I often hear people of their OWN race using discriminating words amongst eachother about their OWN race ...... I hear of segregated colleges...... etc etc........ I think racism is still very alive by its very own race. Why do you think racism is still alive?(I for one am NOT prejudice)You can answer anywhere here. Because, unfortunately, there are racists out there who keep instilling hate into their children. It's very sad that the people of the world cannot get along. The problem is larger than just racism, I think.

Whole cultures spend time instilling hatred of other cultures into their youth. The youth grow up with this hatred implanted in their mind. It is molded into their thinking.

Unless something can break the cycle totally, it will, very sadly, continue. Perhaps if we could bring more people to really practice Christianity (not just go to church a few Sundays a year and ignore the Bible's direction in their lives), we could eliminate racism. It would, however, take at least a generation or more to have a real effect. In the meantime, we can only educate as many who will listen about the true destructive powers of hatred, racism being one of them.

Tough question Any of the following can be considered as racism. The belief that members of one race are superior to members of other races The belief that members of one ethnic group are superior to members of another ethnic group. The belief that capability or behavior can be racially defined.

Aggression or discriminatory behavior towards members of a certain race or races. Aggression or discriminatory behavior based upon differences in ethnicity. Ethnically or culturally discriminatory behavior exhibited by members of the racial, ethnic, or cultural group dominant within a society.

The practice of asserting or assuming racially or ethnically defined cultural dominance. The perpetuation of racial, ethnic, or cultural dominance of some groups over others. Opportunity inequality resulting from preferential treatment towards others of a similar cultural background.

The act of using political, judicial, civil, and educational systems to oppress one based on their ethnicity. That said, I think its continuation comes from many factors. That's what you learned and you don't know any better.

This is getting less and less. Political motivation. Sometimes a political advantage can be obtained by claiming racism where none really exists.(Democrats do this to Republicans all the time) Cultural Racism - This exists to a very great degree in Sweden and Japan although the Japanese version has a large ethnic component.

I could go on but I think you get the point. Sources: Talent on loan from God .

IGNORANCE and pride People are afraid of what they don’t know and what they don’t understand. As for certain things like the N word I guess you're referring to, I think it's like a pride thing. Like, never forget where you came from, that kind of thing. At least, that's what I've been told.

I personally feel that after all these years of being discriminated against, some just decided to not to be ashamed anymore and to use it in a? Positive? Way, kind of like, you can't hurt me by calling me that because I've decided to be that before you ever could.

Okay, not my most eloquent answer, but hey, I'm trying here! =) Sources: many I've met here in the South eena12179's Recommendations Strangers to These Shores: Race and Ethnic Relations in the United States (Book Alone) (8th Edition) Amazon List Price: $106.40 Used from: $53.95 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5 (based on 3 reviews) When She Was White: The True Story of a Family Divided by Race Amazon List Price: $23.95 Used from: $106.403 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 out of 5 (based on 8 reviews) The N Word: Who Can Say It, Who Shouldn't, and Why Amazon List Price: $206.403 Used from: $106.403 Average Customer Rating: 3.5 out of 5 (based on 6 reviews) I Don't Have Your Eyes Amazon List Price: $106.403 Used from: $406.403 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 (based on 11 reviews) Defensive Racism Amazon List Price: $29.95 Used from: $19.70 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 out of 5 (based on 24 reviews) Roots (Four-Disc 30th Anniversary Edition) Amazon List Price: $506.403 Used from: $30.50 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 (based on 19 reviews) Bob Marley and the Wailers Live at the Rainbow Amazon List Price: $106.403 Used from: $06.407 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5 (based on 11 reviews) .

Racism is as old as humanity and I doubt that it will ever be completely gone. Many Sociologists seem to think it has a lot to do with people’s own self-worth. I’ll use the south as an example since that’s the region that I know best.

Back during the civil rights movement it wasn’t for the most part the wealthy or educated white people who opposed integration but instead it was poor whites. The more prominent families sometimes were afraid to speak out but for the most part they didn’t oppose civil rights and often fully supported them. The opposition came from people who had no money, no education and no real hope for anything better and the only thing that they had to hold onto that made them feel like they were better than anybody was that they were white.

White culture in the old South was segregated also with the poor whites knowing that they were expected to be deferential to “their betters” just the same as blacks were expected to be deferential to them. Because of that they were determined to keep somebody, anybody, lower on the social ladder than they were. Today things have improved a great deal but a lot of the old habits are still there and I was amazed at how much of it I ran into as I campaigned for a black candidate for the US Senate last year. It’s not as bad as it used to be but I don’t think that it will ever completely disappear.

You might read "To Kill a Mockingbird" and notice just who is the worst racist in that book. Sources: my experience .

People naturally gravitate to those with similar interests and appearances Once a group forms, it starts acting like a group, highlighting the differences of that group from other groups. There is strength in numbers. Other groups may feel threatened by this, and begin to build boundaries and “walls” between groups.

Individuals compete for jobs and other social status, and groups will support their own members before members of other groups if the walls are high enough. These groups tend to follow racial lines, but there are religious groups and ethnic groups and economic groups also. Nowadays, racism and discrimination are not about thinking that one individual is better than another based on their membership in a group. It is more about supporting members of your group over members of another group in a competition for limited resources.

The racism springs from the walls between the groups. These walls are shortsighted, but they are a part of human nature. I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
