Why does my septic line keep getting clogged and what can I do to help prevent it from reoccuring?

I have lived in my house for about 3 and a half years. After about the first year I had the septic line replaced from the house to the tank because of roots. Since my 19 yr old neice moved back in with me the line gets clogged at a minimum of once a week and I get my snake out and go clear it, but its getting so OLD.

Suggestions would be most appreciated. It appears to be clogging where the old and new pipe meets near the tank. Asked by iamhobbit 52 months ago Similar questions: septic line clogged help prevent reoccuring Home > Home Improvement.

Things are clogging it up This is not an easy question, but the fact that your young niece moved in may provide a big clue. The last time our septic line got clogged, the technician who cleared it said it was plugged with tampons. You may want to ask your niece to not dispose of these down the toilet.

Another idea: Use that septic tank treatment stuff that you can buy at the supermarket. Used regularly, it's supposed to keep the bacteria working. There are other possibilities, to be sure, but these are my suggestions..

Have it scoped! There's no way for anyone here to know exactly what's wrong with your main drain line (I assume that's where the problem is). But I've been through the same thing; our drain line kept clogging up, and we'd end up with standing water and sewage in the basement every time.

We'd have it power-snaked, and then we'd end up with the same problem in six months or less. Eventually we had to have the line scoped with a camera. It turned out that the plumbing was very old.

We had a cast iron pipe under the foundation; it extended for about four feet out into the yard, where it connected with a ceramic pipe to the sewer. Half of the cast iron had completely corroded away at the join, and roots were almost totally blocking the rest of the pipe. We had to spend $3,000 to have the front yard excavated, the foundation jackhammered, and the whole pipe replaced.

The scary thing is that I later found out that if the break had been under the street (instead of in our front yard), we would have had to pay to have the street excavated. We'd have had to pay policemen overtime to guard the excavation, 24 hours a day. And we'd have had to pay to have the street restored to its original condition. It could easily have cost more than $20,000!

You'd think that the city would be responsible for line repairs under city property, but they're not. I found that in our state, only one city pays those costs. Anywhere else, it's the homeowners' responsibility - and the city inspector who told me this also told me that many people end up bankrupted by those costs.

Of course you have a septic tank, so at least you don't have to worry about that possibility! Still, it would be a good idea to have the line checked out visually. It's not cheap - it cost us about three or four hundred dollars - but at least then you'll know what the problem is. Incidentally, our insurance didn't cover a penny of the cost.

I'm told there are some add-on policies you can get that might cover this sort of repair, but since we didn't have one of those policies, we were stuck for the full cost. Which is why I'm of the firm opinion that Allstate sucks.

A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
