There is no final explanation to that at the moment, but there are several theories. science-frontiers.com/sf063/sf063a04.htm... text from 1989. Says it might be some sort of standing-wave pattern in the atmosphere or a novel sort of aurora.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spherical_harmonic... related possibility is spherical harmonics, similar to what happens in the sun. The planet would be effectively resonating like a 3D drumhead. If that's true, there should be other points on the surface that exhibit similar phenomena.

Like the eye on the south pole. space.com/scienceastronomy/061109_monste... Capra had an interesting section on hexagonal structures like these in his book, Web of Life. He was talking about Dissipative Structures, discovered by Ilya Prigogine. In the experiment that was being described, a small dish of water was heated up uniformly from below.

At a certain point, these hexagonal structures emerged. Hot water would rise from the bottom of the dish, travelling in a pipe directly through the middle of the hexagon ( forming a point in the middle that you could see ). When the water hit the surface, it spread out cooled, and then travelled back down to the bottom, creating the sides of the hexagon.

Apparently they were getting multiple hexagons, and they were incredibly stable ... ie you could run a pen through them and disturb them, and they'd immediately revert to these perfect hexagons. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritjof_Caprahttp://www.fractal.org/bewustzijns-besturings-model/Fritjof%20Capra's%20The%20Web%20of%20Life. atmos.albany.edu/student/kristen/vrwrevi... next good view of the hexagons is expected to be in about a year and a half, when Cassini is scheduled to venture even further north. The sun will be shining on it then, which will allow scientists to see how the hexagon influences higher clouds that were invisible in the infrared images. So, we might know more after that.
