Why is a California quail only in California?

The California quail is found in much of California, Oregon, Nevada, Idaho and Washington states, plus southern British Columbia. Its "type locality" is in California and it is well adapted to the mild climate and habitat there. Birds have been transplanted around the world for local purposes.
