Why is a person who plays the piano called a pianist, but a person who drives a race car not called a racist?

A pianist studies the piano, while the race car driver does not study, rather than participate in. -ist is someone who practices, while a race car driver is simply driving the car, rather than studying. I haven't heard this joke before, it was okay.

It's because piano is a noun and race is a verb.
