Given the NBA finals featuring a local team, the total lack of suspense in the "contest" for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination and a venue in a city that is notorious for late arrivals and early departures, its no great surprise that Jerry Brown's victory party was small and subdued. Thirty minutes after the polls closed there were only about 150 people gathered at Club Nokia -- Jerry Brown's election night headquarters. And, all of those people were fixated on the NBA finals.
Multiple big screen tvs were positioned throughout the venue and not one was tuned to a news channel. The only person not fixated on the game was Mayor Villaraigosa, who was chatting with the assembled media. But, as the clock ticked down in the fourth period, Villaraigosa peeled himself away from the bank of cameras and scrambled to reach one of the television monitors.
