Why is gravel necessary 4 an aquarium?

Gravel actually isn't necessary. It's actually better without as it's easier to clean then. Most aquarists that use gravel like it for the looks.

But if live plants are involved a substrate is needed to hold the plants down and to hold nutrients.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
