It's important to expose your baby to many different stimuli (music, language, pictures) early on, while his neural pathways are still being formed. Neural connections that help children develop happen when there's a need for them. The reverse is also true: If the brain has no reason to make connections for, say, Chinese language, it won't make them and eventually will prune those branches away.
(Yes, you can learn Chinese when you're older, but it's much more difficult for this reason.).
