Why is the ammonia found in most common hair dyes bad for your hair and scalp?

Ammonia used in hair dye is usually less than 1% in concentration but it is still very strong and damaging to the hair. Ammonia enables the hair follicles to become porous which makes it easier for the colorants to seep into the hair but it also strips hair of it's natural nutrients and causes dry damage and generally weakens the quality of the hair it is used on. New ammonia free products are far less damaging to the hair because they contain more natural products compared to damaging chemicals.

But hey, at least it is better than the ancient times when the Ancient Romans and other ancient cultures used a mixture of pigeon poop and ash to lighten hair color before their ornatrix (hairdresser) had to urinate on the hair to help set the color.

Ammonia can have adverse effects to the health of a person who is subjected to it. These are: 1. Inhalation of ammonia of lower concentrations in the air can cause coughing, irritation of nose and throat, rapid skin and eye irritation.2.

Ammonia can get into the cuticle of the hair and damages the amino acid protein called Tyrosine which can be found inside the hair shaft. Tyrosine is important because it is the one that produce melanin a natural pigment found in the hair shaft. When this is damaged, the hair will lost its ability to hold onto color and this will be greatly reduced or eliminated.

If a hairdresser introduces color into the hair shaft without damaging Tyrosine, the color can last longer because it has something to bond to.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
