Why would a 1998 Nissan Maxima's RPM needle go down to 3 or 1 and then turn off plus also shake when reaching speeds of 40 or higher?

Why would a 1996 Nissan maxima's RPM needle go from 2 to 6 and seven, back and fort like crazy.
