Will the picture on a Blue-ray disc player with 1080p, look as good with a HD-TV with 1080i?

Not quite but the difference is too small to most people 1080i and 1080p actually contain the same information, they just display them differently. In 1080i (i stands for interlaced), for each frame of picture, the odd number of rows (540 rows) of pixels display first then the even number of rows (the other 540 rows) just 1/30th seconds later. In 1080p, the action is progressive for each frame for all 1080 rows, making the picture smoother looking, with less motion artifacts and jagged edges.

Will you be able to see the difference in artifacts and jagged edges? That depends on what 1080p TV you are comparing your 1080i TV to. There are always top of the line 1080p TVs and there are those less capable.

For example, if you compare the picture to the best, such as the ones with 120 frame rate, and with best contrast, color saturation and color accuracy - think the most expensive ones from Samsung (LCD and plasma), Sony (LCD), Panasonic (plasma) and Pioneer (plasma), then the difference is noticible, but you have to look really carefully, and only on some fast moving scenes. If you compare the picture quality to some ordinary 1080p TVs, the difference will be smaller. Remeber, picture quality has more to do with contrast ratio, color saturation and color accuracy, than to resolution.

That is why for plasma HDTVs, you don't really need 1080p at this moment, since plasma has the best contrast and color depth. The other consideration is that some 1080p TVs can not display 1080p/24, they can only accept 1080p/60 or 1080p/30 signals. But since blu-ray discs are 1080p/24, the blu-ray player automatically sends its 1080p/24 signal from the disc to its own video processor which then outputs a 1080i/60/30 signal.

This leaves the HDTV to do the final step of deinterlacing and displaying the incoming 1080i signal in 1080p. Or some blu-ray players will go further to do the deinterlacing themselves and output 1080p/60/30 to the TV. In this case, the difference might be even smaller.

Last but not least, screen size plays a big role here, the bigger the TV is, the more obvious the difference is. Hope I have been clear. We can always discuss it more later.

1 Most people won't notice the difference. If you know what you're looking for there will be artifacts clearly visible on the 1080i that you wouldn't see on the 1080p. But if you haven't had the artifacts pointed out, you'll probably never notice.
