I think it can but often martial arts can over sell itself. Building confidence etc.If we take a look around. Successful people.
Politicians, musicians actors. Company directors. Many have never done martial arts training.
Confidence is often only built by being in the respected field. That said it certainly helps with discipline and a chance to succeed at something. Good discipline for kids too.
. Also real life situations on the street are totally different than the dojo.It depends greatly on the individual. Just my view.
It does and this is one aspect that even a lot of McDojos succeed at with their students and one of the reasons why they are able to stay in business. The belt promotion system is a built in goal setting and goal achievement system that motivates students while modifying their behavior and work ethic and this in turn helps them to develop their self-discipline and self confidence and drive. Once they get on that path then it becomes self-motivating for them and you would not believe how hard and long I have seen a student work for a different color belt or maybe a piece of tape on the end of it and the self-esteem and recognition that brings for them.
So in the above sense it is not a just a gimmick but a tried and true method of behavior modification that instructors and schools use for the purpose of their students learning and training in martial arts. Here is a little experiment for you at home. Take something you like; it could be cookies or ice-cream or even beer, if you are old enough to drink.
Now sit down and assign yourself several tasks to accomplish before having any and the more tasks you can accomplish the more you can have. I bet if you force yourself to stick to this you will get more done than otherwise unless you cheat. In martial arts the motivation is not food but instead the recognition, self-esteem and satisfaction that promotion carries with it.
Students developing their self-confidence to try is one of the outgrowths of all this along with some other aspects that they refer to as the health and welfare benefits of taking up martial arts.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
