You are stranded on a desert island when you unearth a laptop with just enough batteries ..... You are stranded on a desert island when you unearth a laptop with just enough batteries and (strangely enough) wireless internet access to hold a 5-second video chat. Who would you call? (You may not call your mom.) Asked by dougmo 60 months ago Similar questions: stranded desert island unearth laptop batteries Games & Leisure > Travel.

I would call anyone that I would trust to follow-up on the call So let's assume the following: 1) I don't know where I am. 2) I don't have any way of figuring out where I am (i.e. No GPS enabled device, I don't remember how to find long/lat using a stick and patience, and I can't use any of the IP location services to narrow my location based on IP address) 3) I don't know whose computer it is (otherwise I'd just call them and say "I'm where you buried your computer") 4) The connected camera is fairly decent (enough to pick up the night sky) 5) The person I communicate with will record the video for replay later 6) I do have food and water to survive 7) I do know the cardinal directions (e.g. North, south, etc - these are easily determined using a stick and sunlight) 8) I cannot use the computer prior to this (to type anything out) 9) I cannot send another communcation (e.g. An email) 10) I do know what time it is (I have a watch - what timezone it's set to does not matter.

I can use the sun/stick method to reset to the local noon). Then I'd take my best shot at rescue by doing the following: 1) figure out roughly how big of an island I'm on. 2) watch for air or shipping traffic (and in what direction) 3) Figure out when the tide is coming in and out and what it's height was.

4) Figure out how many degrees off due east the moon rose (one finger on an out-stretched arm is about 1.5 degrees at the horizon), what time it rose and what time it set. When I place the call I would do the following: Write on the ground (in sand): ------ Moon @ **. * degrees @ **:** island is ***** yards around have|have not seen planes heading are|are not islands nearby Tide came in @ **:** and rose ** inches ------ Video: start with a 2 second shot of the ground where I wrote that information and 3 seconds at the stars over the horizon with my finger in the shot pointing exactly south.

" Audio: "I have food and water. I'm pointing due south. I love you guys.

Find me." The key points here are: 1) I have food and water so don't stop looking for me after 5 days. 2) The island's basic size should help them narrow the search 3) Nearby islands may help narrow it also 4) The lunar information will help figure out where on the planet I am 5) The air traffic info will narrow it further.

(if I'm seeing lots of air traffic that narrows my location - if I can identify the airline that would really help) 6) The tidal information will help narrow it further (tides vary by location) 7) the night sky plus my indicated direction (and they know the time) will assist in determining my location With this information they should be able to narrow down my location enough to focus the efforts on best guess locations. Would it work? Dunno.

But it would keep me busy for a few days and give me hope for a few months. After that I'd either be dead or have a pretty good idea that I would survive for the long haul.

E-mail the Coast Guard I'd use your 5 seconds to type a fast email on the Coast Guard contact site saying where you think you are and that you want to be found. uscg.mil/global/mail/" rel="nofollow">uscg.mil/global/mail/ Sources: uscg.mil/global/mail/" rel="nofollow">uscg.mil/global/mail/ .

SOS! I would call the Coast Guard or US Navy (wonder what their phone number is?!) before I called my mom! I want rescued!

LOL! And I would not use the video part, just email or IM so as to save the extra power required for the video. *Poppet*'s Recommendations Rescue From Gilligan's Island Amazon List Price: $9.99 Used from: $5.50 Average Customer Rating: 3.0 out of 5 (based on 52 reviews) .

My husband/boyfriend First how would there be wi-fi on an island cause in that case I'd rather have a cellphone to call the Coast Guard...but back to your question hoping they'd be online to have this miracle 5 second video chat I would want the man I love ...now if he isn't available then I would want to have the 5 second voice chat to my sister.
