My Dad Daddy had a triple coronary bypass many years ago -- in 1973. It went extremely well and he recovered beautifully. Before the surgery his mind had started to seem like dementia, I guess because his brain was not getting enough oxygen.

After surgery he was our Daddy again, sharp and fun and smart. They didn’t know about HIV then at all. He died from AIDS in November of 1978.

S tissues were saved by Stanford, where they did his last exploratory surgery, and either the year after or the following year, my mother requested the tissues be tested for HIV and they were positive. Today they not only know about AIDS and the blood is a lot safer, but the surgical techniques are much more refined and whoever it is you are worried about should do just fine. As I recall, Daddy needed a little time to heal -- he was sixty when he had his surgery.

When we rushed him to the hospital. The doctor said he had a heart attack and most of his arteries were blocked. They had surgery on him immediately.

I'm happy to say my dad is still alive today manly because of Duke who new to lick his face and hands.

My husband had a quintuple bypass in 1999. He was in surgery for 7 hours and when he came out he was almost unrecognizeable because of all the fluid they put into him. He was out for a couple of days, thanks in part for the nurses hitting the morphine button for him.

He also had a record number of tubes in and out. I counted 6 in and 7 out. When they pulled the breathing tube out the first thing he said was "Did anyone get the license of that bus that hit me?"

Ordinarily most folks are out of CCU in two or three days, but his heart was upset over the surgery and would slow to a stop, whereupon thay would fire off the automatic defibrillator. When he had his angioplasty several years before they hadn't implanted the automatic one and so would have a Chinese fire drill every few hours and attack him with the paddles (he did NOT like those and thought he was shouting at them to stop but in actuality he didn't say a word). He ended up in CCU for 5 days instead of the usual 2 or 3.

The red heart pillow they give you after surgery is invaluable. You need to clutch it to your chest whenever you sneeze or laugh - they have to cut through your sternum to do the work and wire it back together with staples. However, when you put sudden strain on them it hurts!

He was walking slowly around the halls oif the hospital about 7 days after surgery and went home after 10 days. Once at home he discovered that the most comfortable place for him was semi-reclined in his recliner, with his pillow. We had a slight problem with an infection in the incision but he got over that hurdle and now is doing fine, 9 years after surgery.

S new arteries have not silted up at all and he no longer even sees his cardiologist more than once a year. He had to complete 6 months of physical therapy (mostly riding a stationary bike with electrodes on his chest) but otherwise not much changed for him except he no longer has that "heavy" feeling in his chest even when he exercises. And he has a most impressive "zipper" on his chest.

I had quad bypass 10 years ago So far so good. But you have to realize that it does not matter how many arteries are being bypassed. If they are cracking your chest open, that is where all the hurt comes from.

And not to sugar coat it, it will hurt and be very uncomfortable. But you will survive and get to live. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
