It's very easy The basic recipe is 3 parts oil to 1 part beeswax. It's really that simple, but of course you can get fancy with it too! If it comes out too hard or too soft, simply remelt it and add a little more oil or wax until it comes out the way you like it.

If you do like it a little harder, you can substitute carnauba wax for the beeswax. Some people like the harder lip balms when the weather is warmer, and the softer ones when it is colder. Most people add essential oils to lip balm, but don't go crazy, some essential oils can be very irritating.

Start by adding about 8 drops per ounce of base (remember, you can always remelt and add more). I like to use food flavoring instead, I think it is more intense and possibly a little safer as it is food grade. Add about 1/8 tsp per ounce of base.

I have also used "lip balm flavor oil" from TheChemistryStore.com. The preparation is simple too. The traditional way is to melt the wax and oil together in the top of a double boiler.

Don't let the water boil over or you will end up with water in your mixture. I prefer to use the microwave oven, it's much faster. Put the wax and oil in a microwave-proof container and melt in 30 second increments because you don't want the mixture to boil.

Keep an eye on it because you want to remove it from the oven the minute the wax is completely melted. Add the essential oils or flavoring and pour into pots or tubes. Let cool overnight before putting the lids on your containers.

If cracks form in the lip balm, it is because the mixture was too hot when it was poured, try pouring at a lower temperature next time.
