Yes because humans only lived for 30 or 40 years at most. Some women can only create life till they are 30 so it was preferable to marry women to older men that were rich as much as it was preferable to arrange a wedding between your teenage children so that your family could have access to the neighbors wealthy lands or properties. Marriage in medieval times was based solely on the survival of humans as a whole.

If marrying the woman you loved meant your village wouldn't have access to the rich mans water source during next years drought it would be considered morally wrong to not marry the rich mans daughter to provide for your town. Since he wouldn't give you access to that resource unless his daughter was married to you this is a form of black mail but it was also a survival issue. People for generations were forced by communities into survival marriages in which divorce was forbidden.

This was horrible for everybody involved. Especially since women were considered property and thus not allowed to have affairs but men were considered in a physical need to spread there seed so they could have as many mistresses as they wanted especially if they were forced into an arranged marriage. Its why arranged marriage is looked down upon now.

Its usually an indication that your society is suffering in some horrible way. Either from religious oppression, lack of resources, or the subjugation of half your population, arranged marriages or forced match's were usually signs of an unhappy society but a stable one.

That's true, but you have to also realize that people died much earlier back then. The life expectancy back then was 30-40 years old. You had to cram a whole lot of living into a really short amount of time.

Waiting until you were thirty to get married would have been like waiting until you're seventy nowadays. And making babies? Forget about it.

We have so much more time to live our lives and, as such, we have time to finish developing (physically, mentally, and emotionally before getting married). We have time to be choosy and make sure we're marrying the right person. We have time to let children be children (and, yes, a fourteen year old is a child).

That's why it matters now. It's a totally different time with totally different circumstances.
