Whether Jesus was gay, straight or bisexual doesn't offend me in the least. For all I care he wore fashionable sandals and his robe as a form of drag. Ok, that was a joke.
But I do believe that Sir Elton John was taking the piss as well. Anyone who would be offended that Jesus was (or could have been) gay doesn't have a problem with their Lord and Savior surely. From the Christian point of view, isn't it enough that he suffered until death upon a cross for the sins of mankind?
Would that sacrifice be any less meaningful if you found out Jesus was a fag? I think the issue is that certain people find homosexuality so immoral and saying that their Jesus was immoral upsets them. Being homosexual pertains to who a person enjoys intimate relationships with.It does not determine their character, their morals or even their personality.
A gay person can be the most wonderful person on earth and they can be the worst. My point is, who you sleep with doesn't make you good or bad. The fact of the matter is, folks, is none of us know the truth about Christianity.
The Bible has been written and re written to suit the person in power more times than can be accurately accounted for. All in all it was a 1,600 year old project that lived by word of mouth before it was even set into stone - literally. The oldest Bible that I'm aware of sits in The British Museum in the UK.
The "Sinai Bible" is very much different than The Bible you would see today. How different? How about 14,800+ differences?
We don't even know if we have the complete Bible as it was meant to be. The Roman Catholic church destroyed two ancient Jewish manuscripts in an attempt to wipe out any knowledge of these books existence. The true name of Jesus Christ was supposed to be within those books.
Was the "true name" of Christ in them? I don't know. It's impossible to say, but what I do know is the church wanted those books to never be seen and so they were destroyed. Throughout the history of the church, many texts were destroyed - usually through orders of whoever was pope at the time.
What they contained might help clear up many things, but without these wonderful, priceless scrolls and texts we're left sitting in the dark. I don't pretend to hold the answers to religion (thought it is fun to ponder). But this character I've read about in The Bible seems to be above love, hope, peace and acceptance.
I feel safe in saying Jesus wouldn't be upset with homosexuality (whether he was or was not gay himself), but he would indeed be appalled at the level of bigotry that exists.
Contrary to the teachings of most churches, Jesus did support gays. Matthew 19:11-12 Jesus replied, "Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. For some are eunuchs because they were born that way; others were made that way by men; and others have renounced marriage because of the kingdom of heaven.
The one who can accept this should accept it. " The eunuchs born that way are gays, the ones made that way by men were men who were castration|castrated, the ones who renounced marriage are men who practiced celibacy (e.g. , monks). For Elton John to say jesus christ|Jesus himself was gay is an extension beyond any Biblical evidence, but certainly not offensive since Jesus did say gays "should accept it (the words of Jesus).
I suspect that the creator of the universe and Son of God is more than capable of being offended for himself and taking whatever action, if any, needs to be taken. From my several readings through the life of Christ in the New Testament, I didn't find any evidence that jumps out at me indicating that Jesus was Gay. It is interesting that Elton (who's music I love, theology, not so much) mentions the possibility of being killed for being gay in the middle east.
Fact is Jesus WAS killed in the middle east, but for a very different reason. He said he was God, the messiah, come to save his people. They considered it blasphemy and had him crucified by the Romans, not for being Gay, but for claiming to be God.
I agree with Mr. John that Jesus taught a lot about forgiveness. He also told people to stop doing wrong, we should remember that also, but probably more on a personal basis, in that I will worry about and work on the wrong that I am inclined to do, and you work on the wrong that you are inclined to do. Sort of along the lines of each of us cleaning our own house first, and letting him who is without sin cast the first stone.
None of us is perfect, and so none of us is able to judge perfectly, but there is a perfect judge, one who lived a perfect life, and I for one am perfectly willing to let Jesus judge for himself concerning the merit of Mr. John's statements, and whether or not He wishes to get involved at some point. I'm usually more than a little bit too busy keeping myself out of trouble to worry about Elton John, unless of course he has some great new music out.
I am not offended. But as a straight man I chuckle at the implication that a man has to be gay to be compassionate, super-intelligent, understand human problems, and be loving and forgiving. No stereotyping there then Elton?
:) I wouldn't dream of commenting on the Jesus part, but I'd remind Elton that you can be a Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela or Martin Luther King and be... you know... completely heterosexual. And I'm pretty sure that none of them would have suggested that you need to have a particular gender or sexual orientation to that kind of a person, they would have encouraged all of us to be that way.
Offended, no that's how these people make money, by pushing people's buttons. If you don't pay them any attention, they move on to something else. I do think he's inaccurate.
Jesus was clearly not gay. But I don't get the reference to the middle east. He's talking about Jesus, and gives an analogy about muslims.
Granted, there are a few non-muslims in the middle-east, but it's primarily the muslims persecuting lesbians. He says Jesus wanted US to be loving and understanding, and says he doesn't understand how people can be so cruel. People who follow JEsus?
Then why mention Muslims.
He's obviously just being funny. I was raised a Catholic, but no longer practice, and I don't take offense. The way I was taught, Jesus loved everyone... whores, gays and even the people who crucified him.
Frankly, if Jesus was alive today he would be ashamed of the intolerant christians out there I'm sure.
I believe in freedom of speech so Elton John can say what he wants but the scriptures in my Holy Bible prove Elton John does not know what he is talking about....
I do not find the statement offensive, but I don't think it is necessarily true either. The statement Elton John says is "I think"... think being the keyword in that. He didn't say Jesus was or is without a doubt. To Elton, maybe he finds comfort in thinking that Jesus was gay.
Being gay isn't a sin and just because someone is gay, doesn't mean they can't control themselves to not have lustful sex. The statement about the women is just reference to the woman not having as many rights as men. Being someone who believes in Jesus Christ, I don't find the statement offensive.
I don't necessarily feel the same as Elton John on the subject. I think because Jesus was only 1/2 mortal that he could better resist the temptations of lustful sex.
In the case of Jesus the Christ his testimony about himself says these things: John 15:1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. John 6:51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.
This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." John 10:36 what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, 'I am God's Son'?
John 13:13 "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. John 18:37 "You are a king, then! " said Pilate.
Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king.In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me. " Acts 9:6 "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting," he replied."Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.
" Acts 9:5-7 (in Cont Matthew 9:6 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...." Then he said to the paralytic, "Get up, take your mat and go home. " Matthew 26:62-64a-Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?
" But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. John 1:49 Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.
" John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him." John 20:31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. John 8:12 The Validity of Jesus' Testimony When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 10:30 I and the Father are one." John 8:24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am the one I claim to be, you will indeed die in your sins. " Jesus claims to be the vine, the Son of man, the Son of God, the truth, the light of the world, the Christ, living bread, Teacher, Lord, one with the Father, and King.
It is best I think to allow Christ to speak for who he is.In searching the Bible...I was unable to find a description (that would have been of utmost importance) that he was gay or any other sexual orientation. Should we speculate then based on a man's opinion about who Christ was? I suppose it is offensive to think that a man who did not know Jesus to make such a claim about him, when Jesus himself made no such claim.
Earlier today I was listening to an Elton John song on the car radio. It was one of his many wonderful songs. Later I came upon this question on Mahalo regarding Elton's comment on Jesus. In my opinion, it's not offensive.
He is entitled to his opinion. I don't feel a need to judge him for his opinion of who Jesus was. It's clear to me that Elton realizes he has been blessed and has shared his blessings with the world. Sharing his talents (both musical and charitable) with the world shows great human compassion.
That's what it's all about.
Jesus claimed to the SON of God, NOT God. Key difference. As for Elton...not sure he'll be singing 'I'm still standing' after Armageddon!
The bible teaches that many things which are now considered 'normal' or 'acceptable' to large sections of society are NOT acceptable to God OR Christ (they are not the same person after all). The bible does not state that homosexuality is any worse than other types of fornication. It is however something that will preclude people from inheriting God's kingdom.
Many scriptures in both the old and new testaments are very clear on this. The Church of England are currently looking to allow gay marriage in churches in England. It's no wonder the Bible also teachers that the religious leaders of Christendom will be the first in line to experience God's wrath as they are supposed to be educating us all about what Christianity means and what god expects of us all.So yes, Jesus and the bible itself encourage us to have a loving attitude toward fellow humans.
It is not our job to judge anyone else. All we can do (if we are interested in God's opinion) is to our best to gain n accurate understanding of how he wants us to lead our life, then do our best to live that way. The rest is up to him.
No...I may not be religious at the moment but I don't think it's a big deal...I'm sure there are many who are outraged by his comment however...it may cause some problems for him if the wrong people see it! Good question :).
I am not offended Before I become offended by anyone I usually consider the source of information. I do not take Elton John seriously . I am sorry but that is the truth.
He has many issues he is dealing with. pinknews.co.uk/2010/02/18/elton-john-los....
Hardly. To me, whether Jesus was gay, straight, bisexual, asexual, or preferred the company of goats is pretty irrelevant - the teachings attributed to him are what's important. Are they any less valid if Jesus was gay?
Gee, what a shock. Elton John has said something outrageous. However will the world survive?
In higher level of our existence we are all Human BEINGS . Why so much emphasis on sexuality? It is quite low level of creativity and even ecstasy... Yes - we can find much higher level of JOY and Ecstasy as Human Beings and if we would all apply to that most important Nature of our existence there will be no need 4 war no more.
:) and there will be Love . So Beautiful. :).
What offends me is saying that Jesus was "super-intelligent". Now I know lots of folks believe Jesus existed and have attributed many quotes from sermons to him. But whether you agree with them or not, they are all basic philosophy, simple ethics, ordinary religious doctrine.
There is absolutely nothing super-intelligent about them. We are not talking about some pioneer in math, like Pythagoras, or an early scientific genius like Archimedes. Jesus was not even a philosopher who worked to build a system of ideas like Plato or Aristotle.
He just preached stuff that he felt inspired to preach with only primitive reasoning, often merely parables. Even his best quotes don't stand up to rational scrutiny. A description as super-intelligent should only be applied to those who have really demonstrated such capacity.
This Parade article wouldn't even garner a mention here on Mahalo. Elton is on tour and knows how marketing works. Work up a little Jesus being Gay statement right before you tour through the "bible belt" of America. Everyone is focusing on wether or not Jesus accepts/ed gays.
Of course he did and does. He loves all of God's creatures. We are all sinners and need his grace and forgiveness.
But Elton said Jesus was gay. The problem with this statement is that the act of homosexuality, act being the key word here, is a sin. Jesus is said to be a sinless man.
This qualified him to be the perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world. A spotless lamb. If Jesus was gay, then he would have to have a sexual relationship with another man right?
Sure, he could love another man, but that's not the definition of gay that we are talking about. If Jesus even had a sexual relationship with a women out of wedlock, or heck EVEN the thought of lust, according to himself was a sin, then he wouldn't qualify as a perfect sacrifice. So saying Jesus was gay undermines the very foundation of Christianity. That Jesus was perfect and sinless.
Sinless in his body, mind, and heart. If Jesus is not, then every aspect of Christian crumbles with out that foundation. This is why some Christian's would even though they shouldn't be offended.
(The bible clearly warns about taking offense).
The only people that will be offended are ones that can't see Jesus as any kind of sexual being. Straight or gay. I remember reading about a woman who was so upset after watching Mel Gibson's movie Passion of the Christ.
She stated that after watching the actor who plays Jesus, that she couldn't get him out of her head. She would have erotic fantasies while at church and now her life is ruined. People have spent too much time over the years separating Jesus from truly being human or having any kind of feelings, urges or sexuality.
I believe that Jesus lived as an ordinary man with extraordinary gifts. Since most historical writings about him never skirt the subject, then this can be left open for interpretation. Thank you Elton John.
Who does elton john think he is, he knows everything now, no problem with his being gay but don't put the label on ours especially our lord, some say jesus was married and had children that doesn't make it true, find out before you open your mouth.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
