How exciting for you to be heading to college - congratulations. I know that most colleges strongly encourage ALL students to share a room with one, sometimes two roommates. This can turn out to be a wonderful experience, a disaster, but usually it's somewhere in-between.
The lessons learned are often worth the less than pleasant parts of sharing living space with relative strangers. However, if you feel particularly strongly about NOT sharing you may appeal to the housing department of most schools to request a meeting with an appropriate staff member. In this meeting you will be pressed very strongly to explain your reasons for wishing or needing privacy; this might be based on emotional reaons (depression, claustrophopia...) but the interview is often intense, so your case must be valid and may require support from an outside party; doctor, counsellor, teacher(s), mentor... Colleges really encourage students to share because it is looked upon as, in most circumstances, a positive learning experience - but for some students it just doesn't work for them!
Consider the pros and cons, check out your options and ability to appeal a decision. Best of luck, and I hope you have a fabulous senior year.
Check with them as to what they allow for first year students, and also what is available. It may or may not even been an option for you. Generally if the option is available to have your own room, you will be paying alot more for your housing.
My daughter did this in her second year of college. You might look at the university's website to see what they say are your options. My daughter was able to find a 2-room room in one of the residence halls--one was supposed to be the bedroom and one the living area for two people, but it could also be set up as two bedrooms.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
