As we spend more and more money on education our students graduate with smaller vocabularies and SAT's. Why? A study done in 1999 showed that the average 14-year-old during the 1950’s had a vocabulary of 25,000 words, compared to today's average 14-year-old, whose average vocabulary is only 10,000 words.

I am so tempted to say because they're stupid, or as thick as a brick, but that's not the case. Let's place the blame where it belongs: kids today don't know how to communicate at the interpersonal (or any other level) because they're too busy texting! They probably have a texting vocabularly of hundreds of thousands of words and may even know what most of them mean, but when it comes time to writing them out or making a coherant sentence - forget it!

It's a shame they can't put answers on their SAT exams like: its rly gr8 I cn tke ths tst lke ths - god im smrt! I actually get a paper or two per semester in some of my classes and they read like that - care to guess what grade they get? Then they complain and say they wrote it correctly!

I even had one complain to the department chairman, who said he would have done the same thing, so the kid went to the Dean who backed us both! The next time he took the course, the kid wrote a proper paper. We're raising a generation of texters who can't write, can barely speak and who can't carry on a conversation because they have their earphone things in their ears listening to music and who think rap is good English.

Makes me fear for the future of this country! .

I have actually seen kids sitting 6 feet from each other texting instead of talking to each other. With the hours they spend watching television, playing video games and texting it is no wonder they are ignorant and socially retarded. They don't read and if they have to concentrate more than 30 minutes on something they are lost.

I didn't mention anything about people being stupid. I cited a study I have seen often over the years showing our kids have about 40% of the vocabulary kids in 1950 did. That means they are less educated, not stupid.

It is the technology. Nobody reads. We are in transition.

But what will it be? Not literate, that is for sure.

Too many kids have too much drama in their lives and not enough stability.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
