Search As an "Askville Veteran" who asks questions, my way of finding out if a question has already been asked is pretty much just my memory. Askville is not set up, really, as a search engine, when the only way of effectively searching it is by topic, not specific words. Then the problem comes of what topic a question might be listed under. It’s just easier to go ahead and ask the question.

If it’s been awhile since it’s been asked (IF it was asked before) there is a whole new flock of people to answer it and you might get some new answers and perspectives to the subject, which could be a very good thing. Can there ever really be too much information on a subject? Askville wants the questions, I’m sure; there success at this site is measured in the number of users and the number of questions, so I dont’ think it can hurt anything to ask a question that’s been asked in the past.

Especially since they don’t have an easy way to determine this. If I was really desperate to find something on Askville, I would use Google to search through it, though. If you were doing research, though, using Askville is like using someone else to actually do the research, isn't it?

To me, using Askville to research something, like for a paper I was writing, might not be the most effective way to do it--it's like putting a "middle man" in the mix--someone else is doing the research for me. If I was researching for some specific info, I would go to Google. If I wasn't sure what I was actually searching for, or wanted other sources for my info, I might ask for suggestions from Askvillers as to where to go, but not for the actual info.

Advanced Google Most of my questions are highly specific and personal, so even if someone asked a similar one, I'd want to ask again. New people join Askville all the time. If you want to search by something other than topic, go to Google's Advanced Search. In the "domain" section, type "askville.amazon.

Com" and then use the search boxes as usual. Works like a charm. ASKVILLE--when will be able to search properly from YOUR site!?

That's an interesting question. First, I think about whether it matters if the question has been asked. If I'm asking an opinion question, then it doesn't matter too much about whether the question is already out there because there are other people to answer.

I try not to ask it if it were asked recently, I guess, but opinions, and perhaps recipes, don't really get "old. " Then, I search in topics I think would be relevant. If I'm asking about a gardening tip, for example, I would look under garden or plants or flowers or whatever topics come up when I look at those.

Then, I just ask the question with as many details as I can, topic carefully so that it will get to the right people, proof read it for clarity, spelling, punctuation and grammar, and hit the button. With thew new home page, topicking becomes more important. I hardly look at the home page anymore and find questions, like this one, to answer on topic pages.

The good news is that askville is searched by google, so if you google to find an answer you will find what is on askville. The other good news is that while many of us find the new home page a little busy, it does put the topics and completed questions right out there in front for new people to dive in. I have noticed that questions I asked or answered months ago are seeing the light again through this process...for better or worse.
