Buying 1st home in December, when is it too late to do a housewarming party?

I don't want to have a housewarming during the holiday season or to expect people to give us gifts during this time of the year. Too expensive. I am thinking of March 1, then we will be a bit more settled in at that point too.

I would say whenever you are comfortable with throwing the party. I do not think it would be out of line to throw the party whenever works best for you. Personally in your situation I would think about waiting until spring...especially if you have any outdoor living space (deck, patio, large yard) so you can take advantage of the outdoors for the party and maybe you will have nicer weather. It gives you time to move in...unpack...personalize your home...etc... In the mean time you certainly can invite people over to see the house.

March 1st certainly would not be too late or breaking any kind of social etiquette in my opinion. By the way congrats on the first home!.

I think your worried about Christmas and people being busy, don't worry, you can have it... anytime within the first 3-4 months of moving in. After Christmas/New Years and before Easter, fits in fine. Besides, you'll be spending weeks if not months getting your new home (Congratulations!) ready anyway.

The idea of a housewarming party is to celebrate and show it off, wait till the time is right. Your also going to have a tight budget. Between closing costs, curtins, 20 trips to Wal-Mart, etc. You'll have lots of new bills.

It's a tough balance, as your housewarming party will probably be a mix of friends and family. Family are not there to judge, but friends/co-workers/neighbors, they are a whole new story. Be prepared to have everything straight and clean, heck my housewarming party included neighbors going through my closets to see how big they were!

Be sure to prepare little take away gifts for your guests. Something as simple and inexpensive is fine, but something! Throw a 'theme' party they are easy.

Its never too late! To have a party! I think its way cool of U to think about timing of your party...it is a hard time to plan and throw a party during the holiday season.

All of your friends and family will not mind waiting for a party, but they might bring you gifts earlier than said party...like when they first drop by to say hi... Good luck and congratulations! .

Normal etiquette is 1 year from move in My best friend from high school moved his family into a new apartment, and his wife thought she needed to host a house warming that same month. He worked his butt off arranging furniture, unpacking boxes, and hanging pictures. They later divorced.

Not just because of that one house warming, but you get the idea. It sounds like you have a good plan. You can technically wait for up to a year, but 3 - 4 months is fairly normal.

You are being very considerate of your guests to shift some of the gift burden away from the holidays. Anybody that gives you grief about not having the house warming sooner would be like you looking at their gift and saying, "This is all you got me?!? ".

(Don't actually do that though ;)) Buying a home is a big deal. Celebrate with your friends, but don't knock yourself out. I hope this helps.

Maybe even a Valentines Day housewarming... Or March would be just fine, too...It’s good to wait, because, by then, you’ll have met quite a few of your new neighbors, made new friends...and can incorporate friends and family in your housewarming party. It's going to be exciting but a little rough moving into your new home around the holidays. It IS amazing just how quickly you can get all settled in, though.

Good luck with your new home.
