Can children use Ritalin for ADHD?

Ritalin is often times prescribed to children and young adults for Attention Defect Hyperactivity Disorder, commonly referred to as ADHD. Ritalin is a mild stimulant, like caffeine or amphetamine, and has the physical effect of increasing heart rate and metabolism. This produced subtle changes in brain chemistry which results in a temporary change of mood.

For children with a diagnosis of ADHD, they often have trouble concentrating in school because of excessive restlessness and inability to concentrate. This can sometimes lead to aggressive behavior and can lead to disciplinary problems. Ritalin has the effect of producing calm in the child so they may focus on tasks and concentrate on schooling.

Ritalin is usually not prescribed for young adults past the age of 14, and is often prescribed for children as young as 6.
