Can witnesses / character references be used against a spouse in a divorce / child custody case?

Generally, no. If that kind of information is going to be used against somebody, they have the right to confront it. It can be very relevant who the information comes from.

For example, she might see you as someone with a motive to make things up about her as retaliation for something else. When testimony is anonymous, it may as well be made up.
