Can You Get Herpes From a Cold Sore?

Cold sores are due to a certain type of herpes virus known as herpes simplex virus type 1, although it can also be triggered by another types of herpes virus, which is herpes simplex virus type 2. A type of virus that is more attributed to genital herpes. Spreading genital herpes to other areas of the body is possible and the same goes for oral herpes or herpes conditions that infect the facial area.

Genital and oral herpes transmission usually occurs through direct contact with the infected person, such as kissing, sexual intercourse, sharing personal belongings or by simply being in contact with an open sore. Most individuals acquire the virus during their childhood, the time when the body’s immune system is weak and vulnerable. The virus stays dormant inside the body but becomes activated when triggered by certain factors, such as diseases, stress and other physical or environmental factors.
