Best would be to tear up the tile, easiest would be to tile over. Your solution depends on... Depends on many different factors including size of area to be re-tiled, the condition of the floor you're replacing, and the number of doors, fixtures, and flooring transitions you have to deal with. If the existing ceramic is on a cement slab or on backer board I suggest you chisel up the existing tile and re-tile over the slab, especially if any of the tiles are loose or badly cracked.

Renting an impact hammer would help a great deal. If the old floor was laid directly on the plywood subfloor tearing up the floor will be a mess and you'll probably have to put an underlayment of thin backer board down over the mauled plywood. If the old floor is on a plywood underlayment you can probably tear up the plywood with relative ease.

Tiling over the old ceramic is possible but will add height to the floor thereby complicating doors and flooring transitions. I've seen contractors just spread thinset over the existing tile and re lay the floor. This wouldn't be my choice for most jobs.

I might consider it over small tiles in a bathroom, particularly if I was just trying to quickly sell the house. There are new flexible underlayments that promise to help avoid cracking, I haven't used these but they might be worth a look. Perhaps other responders have personal experience with these products, mine is limited to reading a recent article in Fine Home Building..

The best method ...Is don't even consider it. There is so much work involved in roughing the existing tiles and such, not to mention the astronomical amount of weight your adding with the second floor over the first, this is the worst idea and it rarely works. The best course of action would be to do the job properly in the first place.

Demo the old floor and have a contractor put a new one down. I'm not going to link you to any cute Web sites that tell you how to do this, because in my professional opinion it's just a horrible idea. This would possibly be a code violation as well.

There's no way the existing substrate was designed to support that kind of weight. Please, just do the job right, rather than twice. Sources: 20 years ain the building trades and master carpenter..

It depends on the condition of your previous tiled floor. After the selection of the tile, the most important element of a successful installation is the condition of the surface to be tiled. A properly prepared surface is smooth, stable and free of any defects. It also satisfies the requirements of any special conditions that may exist, such as waterproofing.

Placing new ceramic tile over old, sound, properly prepared ceramic tile is quite acceptable as tile provides an excellent rigid base. Sources: dimstone.ca/FAQ.htm .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
