I have a few! Anything aimed at students will fill the bill, and one I use a lot is "Quick and Easy Cooking for One" by Molly Perham. It's British (so I have it because I am) and suits me fine because there's just me anyway!

If you're not British, you can get it on Amazon, and it includes American translations of words and measures (nobody here would know what a "skillet" is, for example). Most things in there are "do-able" in half an hour or so and are not hard. Another good old standby for people who don't even have a kitchen is "Cooking in a Bedsitter" by Katharine Whitehorn.

Over 50 years old now and dating from a time when it was common to rent one room that would have in it, at most, one electric ring. However did landladies expect their tenants to EAT? I still use it a lot.

The thing with most cookbooks is they assume you know how to do all the basic stuff and want to know how to make more elaborate food. Because you learned from watching your mother and learned the basics from her, didn't you? That might well have been true at one time but it certainly isn't now - we NEED something different.

At the really basic level, there is "How to Boil an Egg" by Jan Arkless, written for her student son, which contains a whole chapter on what to do with any kind of vegetable. "Nosh for Students" by Joy May is in the same kind of vein. In the UK, Delia Smith noticed this gap in the market and did TV shows with accompanying books which were incredibly popular.

Her Complete Cookery Course is not just a cookbook but explains things as well, and the updated version is "How to Cook". Neither is exactly aimed at quick, but there's plenty in them for proper home cooking. She's not a trained chef and that's a good thing - she never has done cheffy stuff, just what is good to do at home.

Chefs make things too complicated! And you can guarantee with a Delia recipe that it will WORK if you follow the instructions - they are all thoroughly tested.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
