Voting abuse. Yes. I read it and thought about the issue.
I personally think that Askville staff tries to just ignore the existence and the depth of this problem. The blog entry is well written but it does not solve the problem when some people just vote others down either to get the BA ribbon or because they dislike them or because they do not like bonus questions! I am not sure if I can criticize Askville for that.
The reason is that Askville staff lacks enough manpower and they always try to address the issue with their limited staff. I do not believe voting abuse is done only but a few. I don't see an indication that it is widespread either, but I have observed people doing so.
Personally I think if a person gives 3 stars or less to an answer that is CLEARLY, by almost all Askvillers' standards, better than his/her answer that would be a voting abuse, unless his answer "sucks" and he would bear the consequences of getting negative gold/points. Having said the above "standard" of mine, I would say there are people committing voting abuse! Since Askville cannot monitor every single question and answer, the most convenient way for them is "raising the bar".
I see this blog entry that way. It seems that they have been more serious about voting abuse in the past. We have also banned the two users based on the amount of abuse they caused.
Voting abuse/collusion is a very serious offense that we do not take lightly. If serious enough, as was the case with this incident, we will immediately ban the users. askville.typepad.com/askville_blog/2007/... As far as I know they haven't banned anybody for voting abuse for a long time.At least they never announced anything about that.
Does it mean nobody has commited voting abuse? I doubt. It just seems to me that they changed their standards.

2 I think it's reasonable and well-stated. The only thing I'd like to see modified a bit concerns #3, opinion questions. Of course everyone's entitled to vote their "opinion" on an opinion answer, and it's difficult to challenge low votes in those instances.
But if it's clearly a "funny opinion/joke" question rather than a potentially polarizing opinion question, I think the "reasonable man" standard should apply when investigating suspected abuse. In other words, would a sample of randomly chosen Askvillers have voted the answer as low? .

3 Thanks for pointing it out, I might have missed it otherwise. I know I have gotten appeals where it has totally amazed me why the person wasn't given 4-5 stars.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
