Do all front-loading washing machines shake a lot?

I have a front-loading washing machine and it shakes tremendously during the spin cycle. Do all front-loaders do this? Asked by superdave 60 months ago Similar questions: front loading washing machines shake lot Home.

I don't know if ALL of them do, but mine sure does! Apparently, they aren't supposed to do this... I just moved to a new house with a very nice high-end (Tromm) front-loading washer. It shakes like crazy and makes the whole house shake. It's upstairs near my bedroom, which is convenient, but I have a feeling that if it were in the basement, the shaking would be absorbed somehow by the ground.

The shaking is quite annoying, and I wonder whether it will cause the washer to wear out sooner than otherwise. I've had top loading washers before, and sometimes they will shake if they get out of balance. You can of course fix the shaking by opening them up and readjusting the distribution of clothes around the basket.

But you can't do this with a front-loader (at least not with mine -- the door is locked during the cycle), and I don't think it's having the load be out of balance that causes the shaking. It might be possible to adjust the levels of the feet somehow so it doesn't shake that much, but I haven't tried that. That's all I can tell you from my brief experience (1 month) with one of these.

Here is an excerpt from from "Laundry Room Q&A | THIS OLD HOUSE": The Case of the Vibrating Washer Q: I have one of those front-loading clothes washers, with the dryer stacked above. It's located on the third floor of a brick town house. Unfortunately, when the washer goes through its final spin it shakes the whole house.

The washer is level, and at the suggestion of a service technician, I now have it resting on a piece of plywood screwed to the floor joists. But after a portion of the ceiling broke loose in the room below, I'm worried that all this shaking might be bad for the house. What do you think?

— Cyril, Leonia, N.J. A: Tom Silva replies: Anything that causes ceilings to collapse isn't good for a house. The service tech was following the manufacturer's troubleshooting instructions for a vibrating washer, but the plywood solution only works if the problem is an unsturdy floor. Front-loading washers are actually supposed to vibrate less than top-loaders, so recheck yours to make sure it's level and that loads aren't just getting out of balance by bunching up on one side of the drum.

Also check to be sure all the legs are in contact with the plywood. If that doesn't correct the problem, then try isolating the vibration by resting the washer on hard rubber pads. I've made my own out of an old truck flap (I used them to isolate a garage door that vibrated every time it opened or closed.

) And if that doesn't do the trick, think about moving the appliances downstairs. Source: http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/html/portals/laundry/questions.html .

Our doesn't unless the load becomes unbalanced or is too large I'd take a look at the load level. You might consider a smaller load and see if your shaking stops. ehow.com/how_112339_fix-washing-machine.... to Fix a Washing Machine That "Walks" Across the FloorDoes your washing machine seem possessed with the spirit of John Travolta during his Saturday Night Fever days?

It's likely that one or more of the machine's feet aren't touching the floor and it is rocking as it washes. To fix the problem, you just need to level the machine. Instructions * STEP 1: Tilt the machine forward so the back feet are 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) off the ground, then set it back down.

The back feet usually are self-leveling--just raising and lowering the machine like this will cause the feet to re-level themselves. * STEP 2: Place a sturdy 2-by-4 wood block under the center of the washer to prop it up so you can access the front feet. You might have to move the washer out from the wall so that you can tilt it up enough to install the block.

* STEP 3: Loosen the locknut on each foot, using an adjustable wrench. Once the locknuts are loose, you can adjust the feet. * STEP 4: Remove the wood block, and if you moved the washer, set it back into position against the wall.

* STEP 5: Place a carpenter's level across the front of the washer and check to see if the machine is level side to side. If it isn't, use adjustable pliers to rotate one front foot or the other until the washer is level. * STEP 6: Place your level perpendicular to the front of the machine and check to see if the washer is level in this direction.

If it is off, readjust each front foot by the same number of turns until you reach level. * STEP 7: Put the washer back on the wood block and retighten the locknuts, then if necessary, push it back against the wall. Overall Tips & Warnings * It's better to adjust the feet so they end up shorter, rather than longer.

The closer the machine is to the floor, the less likely it is to vibrate and shake. * If your machine still "walks" after you've leveled it, it could be that the floor under the machine is weak. Have a carpenter check it.

No The reason that a front loader shakes is because it is off balance and the barrel is moving at a very high rpm (much higher than a conventional washer). But if your washer is set up properly it shouldn't be shaking out of control (if it isn't set up properly, it has the ability to dance all over your laundry room). No - well mine doesn't Mine - a 2 year old Simpson Esprit (what a daggy name for a washing machine) barely vibrates at all when spinning and it certainly doesn't shake. It sounds like it's unbalanced - but my only thought is to call a repairer. It's not still under warranty is it?

This happened to us when we first got the washer and the answer is so simple you won't believe it. TAKE THE FEET OFF! They are not actually feet, they are shipping screws/feet and they are not meant to stay on the washer while it is use.

Unscrew the long screws with the feet and take them off. Problem solved for us. If it still shakes after that call a repair man.
