I have both cameras actually I have the rebel xt (don't really use it anymore), but rebel xt and xti are the same for all intents and purposes here. Anyway... yes, the crop factor is both the same on both the Canon 40D, and the XTi. It is 1.6 of a full frame sensor.Now... when you say do the images look the same size?
The answer is yes. But what if you were to ask do the images look the same. Yes and no.
For the most discerning eye, you may detect a very slight difference in image quality between the same camera. You are probably wondering "how? Why?" the canon 40d is a 10.1 megapixel camera, and uses a Digic III image processing chip.
The canon XTi is a 10.1 megapixel camera, but uses a Digic II image processing chip. Canon currently incorporates Digic IV image processing chips in all their new cameras. The newer the chip, the faster the processor, and the better the image quality.
Digic III chips processes images in 14 bit color space while Digic II chips remained in 12 bit color. The difference is very small if you don't know what you are looking for. Here's more info http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/infobank/capturing_the_image/digic_processing.do now, here's another thought, 10.1 megapixels is a lot of pixels packed onto a small aps-c sized sensor, if you pack more, the image quality can degrade under certain scenarios, but most camera manufacturers have solved this using various tricks in sensor design and software so you don't have to worry too much about it.
1 Not sure what you are asking. The two have the same 10.1 MP, so for a given focal length they should show about the same scene. Google Digital Camera Reviews and read about the two cameras.
