Similar questions: chinchillas make pets rabbits.
I would say that each one is equally desirable to have as a companion animal (I dislike the use of the word "pet"). Both chinchillas and rabbits lead relatively long lives (in the *cat* age range), and can become a good companion animal provided they are treated with gentle, loving care. However, they require much more care to raise and have positive interactions with than dogs or cats--who are naturally more domesticated--so they need someone who has the kindness, patience, and tenderness that they require to fully blossom and thrive.
They are NOT good companion animals for children, however, as they cannot deal with roughhousing as a dog or cat might.
Cats often don't like being held but rabbits do.
