A rabbit, definitely! They are just as litterbox-trainable as cats, aren't as stubborn as cats and can be taught to do tricks! One of my rabbits is quite a character.
In fact I'd go so far as to say that, after meeting my neighbour's dog Buddy, he thinks he is a dog. Whenever Buddy barks, he squeaks back (squeaking in rabbits is only meant to be for fear, but he runs up to the fence, tries to climb up it and squeaks), he rolls on his back in the dirt like a dog, goes absolutely mental when it's feeding time, lies beside me on the sofa when I'm watching TV and licks me to death (don't worry, licking in rabbits is exactly the same as dogs - a sign of affection). A rabbit is cleaner than a cat, won't bring dead things into the house, just as litter tray trainable, more trick-trainable, and won't make a massive amount of noise if they want out or into the house!
I have two, one knows how to beg for food and the other gives me kisses and gives me "knuckles" with his nose against my fist. ... more.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
