Do I have to train on the acoustic guitar before trying to play the electric metal guitar?

Sorry but I disagree with Jimbo. Yes there are some advantages to starting on acoustic, but if you have no interest in acoustic music and end up quitting then there is no advantage to be found. Yeah an acoustic is harder to play, but putting a set of 15's on an electric would serve the same purpose following that logic.

Truth is that old school players are going to say start on acoustic because that's what they did. Not saying it's bad, just saying that playing the kind of guitar you have the most interest in is more important. There are a couple reasons folks say to start on acoustic.

One is that the strings are harder to press so your hand muscles get stronger and this somehow magically makes playing electric easier. If you played acoustic for 2 years and then went completely to electric the muscles in your hands would start to weaken, just like if you stop lifting weights the muscles get weaker. That's how the human body adapts to its environment.

So to me that logic makes no sense. They will also say that you get a more pure sound and your mistakes will be more noticeable. This is true only if you are using effects on the electric.

When you are working on things like scales, etc. you can just play clean and get the same effect. On the other hand, if you're trying to learn a Metallica song you will want those effects as it will sound stupid on acoustic. If you want to play electric music get an electric, if you want to play acoustic music get an acoustic.

This seems like common sense to me. To say that starting on electric is "lazy" is just an ignorant statement to make, especially for a guitar teacher.
