Do you call the evening meal supper or dinner?

I have always called it supper. Is that a southern thing? Asked by AndieGator 39 months ago Similar questions: call evening meal supper dinner Food & Drink > Restaurants.

I grew up with the supper thing too. But the actual definition is that supper is the evening meal; dinner is the main meal of the day. They are often the same for many families.

But dinner can be had at lunch if supper is a light meal.

I don't think it is a southern thing. I remember my grandmother and the way she did things. Breakfast at 7.

Dinner (lunch) was at noon, sharp. My grandparents ran a small mom and pop grocery in a tiny little town - a village, really. Lunch through the week was lunch meat sandwiches (remember chip chopped ham?) potato chips and sweet tea or kool aid.

Supper (dinner) was at 5 pm. Always gravy on the meat, cream sauce on the vegtables. A plate (melmac) of wonder bread, with apple butter to spread on it.

Always some type of desert. The "front room" was only for on Sundays or when "company came". I miss the familiarity and comfort of that life.

1 Tends to be southern and/or agrarian. Farming families often tend to have dinner at noon because of the heavy work they do.

2 I call the evening meal "dinner". My grandparents used to call lunch "dinner", and the evening meal, "supper". It drove me crazy.

I'm also a southern girl. The living room/family room thing drive me nuts too! I get that the family enjoys the family room, but you "live" in the family room, and only use the living room for formal things.

3 In the southwest (Arizona) my family and I have always called it dinner. When I was in the Army stationed in upstate in New York back in 1987, I often heard it called 'supper' by many people. If I had to guess, I'd say it's not necessarily a southern thing but maybe a regional thing.

Of course, I could be totally wrong on this also.

At informal dinner/forces re-union I want to toast "absent friends". When? With the 1st wine?

Or after the meal? " "What is your favorite meal of the day? Breakfast, lunch or dinner?" "Vegas buffets/restaurants offering unlimited or free alcoholic beverages w/ meal?

" "What is a good but easy meal I can make for a Christmas dinner? " "poll what is your favorite meal you know dinner" "What is a good wine choice for a turkey dinner. Something that can compete with all the different flavors of the meal.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
