Here are a few suggestions. The best simple guide to book collecting is John Carter’s ’ABC for Book Collectors. ’ It has been in print almost continuously since it was first published in 1952.It explains all the technical terms in an informative, witty style and is indispensable.

Many people in the field use it for a lifetime. Other books that are worth while include Zempel’s ’First Editions: A Guide to Identification,’ which lists the policies of various publishers for indicating first editions.(Some publishers have changed their policies several times over the last 100 years.) A fun book to read about collectors and book dealers is ’A Gentle Madness’ by Nicholas Basbanes. Lots of good anecdotes here, and again, a witty style.

A great book that is no longer in print is ’Printing and the Mind of Man’ by John Carter and Percy Muir.It is a list of the 350 or so books that have changed history, from the Gutenberg Bible to Einstein and beyond, with wonderful, short explanations as to what their impact was. If you can get a used copy, by all means do so. That’s just for openers.

If you get interested in this, a good site you should know about is: http://www.oakknoll.com/. They are publishers and sellers of books about books, and you’ll find some other possibilities, browsing their site. Here are some suggestions.... Several years ago, when I was publishing Selling Used Books Online: The Complete Guide to Bookselling at Amazon’s Marketplace and Other Online Sites my friend Gen Kazdin offered to pull together a casual bibliography on bookselling for booksellers. I still think it is the best I have seen.... and I have cut and pasted (with old links) below Happy reading, Windwalker Gen Kazdin’s Casual Biography My friend and colleague Genevieve Kazdin is the proprietor of a very well-run online bookshop on Cape Cod, called Dunes Studio, and she contributed mightily to the usefulness of Selling Used Books Online: The Complete Guide to Bookselling at Amazon’s Marketplace and Other Online Sites by distilling years of experience and education into the following casual, annotated bibliography of books about bookselling and book collecting. I thank her heartily for her contribution, her good humor, and her support, and I urge everyone who finds this bibliography helpful or illuminating or amusing, or not, to go directly to her online storefront and buy one or two of her listings, which I can assure you from personal experience will then arrive, very carefully packaged, with lightning speed.

Com Sales Rank: 71,551 Editorial Reviews From Publishers Weekly Basbanes’s guide to book collecting is a more practical, but no less impassioned, complement to his earlier history of bibliophilia, A Gentle Madness. He presents useful tips illustrated with charming anecdotes about the collecting habits of everyone from Winston Churchill to Umberto Eco.To Basbanes, book collecting isn’t about making money, but "about gratifying a passion in a sensible way.

" He urges collectors to buy books that they know and develop specific areas of interest to avoid "buying blind-the most frequently committed transgression in book collecting. " He insists that it is possible to acquire first-rate collections on modest budgets, and extols the virtues of select Internet sites. Particularly intriguing are Basbanes’s descriptions of the most interesting collections he has encountered.

Among these are the George Arents Collection at the New York Public Library, which consists of several hundred thousand objects in 20 languages on the history, literature and lore of tobacco, as well as the Jay Miller Aviation story Collection at the Central Arkansas Library, consisting of 6,000 books on flight history and 50,000 aviation journals, along with hundreds of aircraft operation manuals. Basbanes also offers some startling figures. A first issue copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, for example, recently went for $15,000.

Though targeted primarily at prospective collectors, this lively book will appeal to any book lover, as Basbanes’s enthusiasm is infectious. Ellis wisely does not publish a price guide for books he recommends. He knows how misleading such a guide can be after only a short time.

When I started collecting books in earnest over a decade ago, I knew very little about first editions more correctly ’first printings’. My first education in ’firsts’ came from a 3rd Edition of this handy little book.

I always carry it now the 6th Revised Edition when I’m doing the used bookstores somewhere the urban counterpart to the rock collecting I do in the outback and many times Mr. McBride’s little book has saved me from buying a book misidentified as a ’first’ and has helped me find a few bargains when a long sought ’first’ was not identified as such. One book that may interest you - I recently ordered "Reading Like a Writer: A Guide for People Who Love Books and for Those Who Want to Write Them". I haven't received it yet, so can't go into detail about it, but there were several great reviews here on amazon.com. Apparently, according to the reviews, it is a great book for writers as well as for people that just want to learn how to appreciate books as they read them.
